The Model to Practice Dialogues™

Applying Hofstede’s dimensions to the International Hospitality/Tourism Industry

Geert Hofstede is a Dutch social psychologist. He dates back his affiliation towards the understanding of culture and differences in culture to 1960s. This work evolved as an updated version in 1991 after years of constant research and meticulous observation. He has published books with similar context before this one in the 1980s.

This specific material selected for evaluation is organised into four sections.  The first section explains the definition of the term culture and other associated terminologies. Culture in western civilisation means the refinement of education, art and literature. Social anthropologists view culture as the underlying value system that underpins and holds together a category of people.  Culture is a phenomenon by which specific sectors of people are grouped and are segregated from the rest of society. This section also clarifies the difference between culture, human nature and personality. Culture is learned and not inherited. Human nature is inherited and not learnt. Personality develops based on the inherited characters and from the learning.
